Is this not enough?

I'm still cranky because my long run yesterday was completely rained out, on the only day this weekend I could've done a long run. (While the rest of Singapore had a long weekend, many of us media folks were in the newsroom; while we do get days off in lieu, I don't get a break till this coming Saturday. Saturday cannot come soon enough.)

I woke up at 5am and spent three hours in running clothes, waiting for the rain to stop; when it completely failed I hopped on a bus to do two Zumba classes in a row. Which, thanks to long-run endurance, doesn't feel like any sort of workout these days. (Why Zumba? Why NOT Zumba? Hey, I'm coordinated when no racquets/ sticks/ balls are involved - why waste it?)

This week I'm on the night shift, which simply means that I wake up and start working from home at the usual time, then go into the office at 2 and am physically there on call till 11pm. (No, that's not what it's supposed to mean.)

I've had it, mentally and emotionally. Not even the marathon training plan will get me through this one (been having doubts about that too - I've been running for so many years and I'm still slow, so why will this time be any different?).  I've run right out of motivation. I've just about had enough.

  1. Oh, dear.

On the plus side, it's almost taper time? [Although Hansons don't seem to be too keen on tapering...]

Can I bring you any UK treats to lift your spirits? [Sorry, weather cannot bring.] I can deliver to the office next week! At 10 PM! To make you smile?

Anyway, hang in there. And remember...in just 10 days, you'll be Perth-bound!!!!

    1. TAPER TIIIIIIME! Nah, I'm still going to the track tonight to do some long tempo reps. :)

    2. Taper = Reduce overall volume, but not intensity. The track is totally fine. :)

  2. It sounds like you're just about ready. I always think that training for a marathon is a little like being pregnant. You always get to a point where you're totally over it. And then you have to run it (which is a lot like labour but shorter) and you say never again but a while later you find yourself doing it all over again.

    1. ^Ha! Love the analogy. Especially as I gave a big sigh, and I "I guess I'm going out for another 6 miles...AGAIN." Last night. :)

    2. Haha, thanks Char! I'm over this one even before it's started. At least with marathons I don't have to deal with the consequences for the next 18 years.

  3. Well, I'm glad to hear you're over it because I got really sad reading your post. It sounds like you've got a lot going on, so although you may not be able to train as much as you'd like, hopefully you're able to get SOMETHING out of the race. If nothing else, I'm sure Perth will be a blast.

Have you ever tried a "speed segment?" I don't really know what those are other than short training periods geared towards making you faster, but perhaps you can try something like that once marathon training's over? Although our friend David Epstein has sort of convinced me that I'm a hopeless athlete and nothing I do will ever be enough. Jerk.

Dare I ask... are there no treadmills at your gym?

    1. Oh - I don't have a gym membership; I do Zumba at a random dance studio.(I do however have an office gym and was SERIOUSLY thinking about doing my run on the treadmill there on Sunday - but decided it was better for my sanity to stay the heck out of the office.)

Mr Epstein has also convinced me that I'm a hopeless athlete good for absolutely nothing except staying trim through relentless fidgeting. I'll take whatever superpower I can get.

Perth will either be a blast or five hours of mentally castigating myself for being an idiot!
